The Life and Activism of Angela Davis

Angela Davis grew up in a neighborhood nicknamed “Dynamite Hill,” so-called because of the frequent firebombings carried out by the KKK against Black residents. In this volatile environment, she was surrounded by communist organizers who deeply influenced her political development. While attending Brandeis University, Davis met philosopher Herbert Marcuse, who taught her that one could simultaneously be an academic, a scholar, and a revolutionary. Davis immersed herself in the civil rights movement, driven by the belief that racism and capitalism were the primary threats to American justice. In 1969, she joined the faculty at UCLA, where she became known as a feminist, a communist, and a member of the Black Panther Party. However, UCLA had established a policy against hiring communists; consequently, Davis was fired for her party involvement.
