BLM

In early 2013, Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza, and Opal Tometi formed the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. BLM began with the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. They were fed up after watching things exacerbate for Black Americans. BLM became a political and social movement hoping to put an end to racism, discrimination, and racial inequality experienced by black people. Dr. Melina Abdullah, co-founder of the Los Angeles chapter of Black Lives Matter, voiced that "group-centered leadership is their guiding principle. These guiding principles are due to the influence of Ella Baker - the feminist civil rights leader who championed collective grassroots activism over a single leader. She was clear that movements should be bigger than individuals."

In the last few years, public opinion of BLM has gone down drastically. In June 2020, research found that 67% of adults supported the movement. Towards the end of September 2020, support among many adults dropped to 55%. As of May 2022, support for Black Lives Matter among all racial demographics decreased significantly. This decline is due to the disconnect BLM has with its communities and its lack of focus on issues. Conservatives have accused Patrisse Cullors of misusing organization funds. She responded, "I bought a house in Los Angeles for 1.4 million dollars. While that price seems high, it's a steal in Los Angeles."
