Sade
Helen Folasade Adu, known globally as Sade, was born in Nigeria to a Nigerian father and an English mother. After her parents separated when she was four, her mother moved the family back to England. Following high school, Sade moved to London to study fashion design, but her career took a pivotal turn when she joined the British band Pride as a backup singer. Her magnetic stage presence quickly stole the spotlight. By 1983, the group had evolved and rebranded simply as Sade. Their popularity exploded almost instantly; for their debut performance at London’s Heaven nightclub, the demand was so high that 1,000 fans had to be turned away at the door. Later that year, she signed with Epic Records.
The band’s debut album, Diamond Life, became an international sensation, reaching number one in several countries and the top ten in the U.S., where it sold over four million copies. They followed this success in 1985 with Promise, which topped both the UK and U.S. charts—marking their first number-one album on the Billboard 200. In 1988, they released Stronger Than Pride, bolstered by four hit singles, most notably the soulful "Paradise." After an initial hiatus, Sade returned in 2000 with the critically acclaimed Lovers Rock. The album earned a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album, while the lead single, "By Your Side," received a nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and is now frequently cited as one of the greatest love songs of all time.
Following this era, Sade stepped back from the limelight once again, moving to the Caribbean to live with Jamaican music producer Bob Morgan. During this time, she gave birth to her child, Izaak Theo Adu, who has since gained recognition for his journey as a transgender man. Sade remains an international icon. Beyoncé hailed her as a "true friend" and a career inspiration. Singer Aaliyah admired “her steadfastness and staying true to her style." Though she moved to the English countryside in 2005 and largely withdrew from the public eye, her influence remains undeniable. In 2023, she was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
