The IU Story
I originally began watching Hotel Del Luna out of curiosity, but as I delved deeper into the show, I found the plot fascinating and the characters incredibly likable. The central figure, Jang Man-wol—the hotel’s director—is played by IU. Bound to the hotel by a dark past, Man-wol is constantly monitored by heavenly deities who attempt to guide her toward a path of forgiveness, though she stubbornly refuses every opportunity. The story takes a turn when she hires Ko Chan-sung as the new manager, unaware that these deities have woven a specific plan into his arrival. After finishing the series for a second time, I felt compelled to learn more about the woman behind the character.
Born Lee Ji-eun, IU’s interest in entertainment began early. During her middle school years, she discovered a passion for singing and set her sights on a professional career. Her big break came in 2007 when she signed with LOEN Entertainment. After only ten months of training, she debuted under the stage name "IU"—symbolizing that "I and You become one through music." She officially entered the professional scene with a live performance of "Lost Child."
By 2009, IU launched her first full-length album, Growing Up, promoted by the hit single "Boo." Her trajectory skyrocketed from there:
- 2012: She embarked on her first concert tour, Real Fantasy, performing in six South Korean cities. Opening night tickets sold out in just 30 minutes.
- Accolades: Last Fantasy was named Record of the Year, "Good Day" won Song of the Year, and IU herself was crowned Female Musician of the Year.
- Anniversary Success: To celebrate a decade in the industry, she released the single "Bbibbi," which surpassed one million listeners in just 16 hours and peaked at #1 on Billboard’s World Digital Songs Chart.
IU’s acting portfolio is as impressive as her discography:
- Dream High (2011)
- You Are the Best! (2013)
- The Producers (2015)
- My Mister (2018)
- Hotel Del Luna (2019)
Her performance in Hotel Del Luna earned her a second Best Actress nomination at the 56th Baeksang Arts Awards. Today, IU stands as one of South Korea’s highest-earning personalities and most dedicated philanthropists. Her latest album, The Winning, continues her streak of success with the hit single "Holssi."
