The Random Letter
One morning, while reading in the hotel lobby, he ran into Michael, a fellow guest heading out for breakfast. They struck up a conversation, and Michael mentioned that he was pursuing an education visa with the help of a Vietnamese friend. When Raven heard this, he became incredibly enthusiastic and asked for more information. Michael gave Raven the contact details, mentioning that his friend worked at a nearby coffee shop. Although excited, Raven had been feeling uncomfortable in certain neighborhoods and around certain groups of people lately, yet he decided to go. Upon arriving, however, the environment felt too familiar and off-putting, so he decided to pursue a different path to obtain the visa.
Every Sunday, Raven spent time with a local family—eating at their vegan restaurant. During one of their meetups, he mentioned that he was seeking information on applying for an education visa at Da Nang University. To his surprise, his friend Vinh told him he had a contact at the university who could assist with the paperwork. Vinh connected him with his friend, Oan. The next day, Raven reached out to Oan, who sent a list of the required documents to initiate the admission process. Raven began working through the application methodically, neatly organizing his paperwork as he went. Whenever he needed clarification on a phrase or a process, he would consult with Oan. Eventually, Oan instructed him to bring the completed application directly to the university upon his return to Vietnam.
A week later, Raven prepared for a trip to Malaysia. He packed the documents in his backpack, ensuring they would be safe for his return. Once he arrived, he checked into his hotel, unpacked, and left for a brief walk in Chinatown. The next morning, he asked the front desk clerk, Elise, for an envelope to store his admission documents. She pulled out a large box filled with used 6x9 envelopes, each with random addresses written on the front. Raven grabbed one, tucked his documents inside, and placed the envelope into his backpack.
What Raven failed to realize was that he always stored his iPad in that exact compartment. Weeks later, he had completely forgotten about the envelope. While flying from Malaysia to Indonesia, he removed his iPad during airport security. Unbeknownst to him, the envelope was stuck behind the device. As he placed his items into the plastic bin, the envelope remained hidden—seemingly moved there by an invisible hand.
After clearing security, Raven gathered his belongings. As he reached for his iPad, he caught a glimpse of the envelope. But because the address written on the front was unfamiliar, he assumed it belonged to another traveler and left it in the security bin. As he walked away, a security officer called out, holding up the envelope and asking if it was his. Raven turned, shook his head, and kept walking—never realizing it was the very document he had worked so diligently to prepare. Three days later, as he sat in a café, the realization finally struck him: that envelope was his. All he could say was, “Goddamn!”
