Amygdalin (B17) Laetrile

Amygdalin is a compound found in the seeds of apricots, apples, peaches, plums, red cherries, etc. The brief history of Amygdalin is connected to Dr. Ernst T. Krebs who thought it could be effective against cancer. Unfortunately, it was found to be very toxic. In the 50s his son purified a form of amygdalin (Laetrile), which became popular for alternative cancer treatment. But for various reasons the FDA banned its use indefinitely. Known also as B17, when our bodies break it down, it produces cyanide, which some experts say is responsible for killing cancer cells. The FDA claims that calling Amygdalin a vitamin is manipulative and is only a way of getting around the regulations.

Minor studies on animals treated with amygdalin have had mixed results. Several studies found very little benefit, while others had modest effect on certain kinds of cancer cells. Only two studies have examined the effects of laetrile on cancer in humans. In one study, 178 people were treated with laetrile but there no significant effect on cancer. In the other study, six people were treated but again the results were even less promising. Scientists found that in each study individual’s cancer continued to spread.

When you search the internet to purchase B17, a package of apricot seeds appears on Amazon. The advertisement states, “whether you’re looking for a natural way to detoxify your body or want to add a little something extra to your diet, apricot seeds are a great option. They’re packed with antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Perhaps natural seeds are the way to go.
