Interest Rate Poem by Sida

I sit in a coffee shop

Music plays slowly in the background

AC is quiet

I feel the coolness over my body

Erykah Badu plays in the background

The room vibrates

The beat of the drums and bass guitar

But on my mind is not music

But a plan to write something adequate

I search endlessly for an idea to rise

I consider a very boring topic

I call interest rate

It has been on my mind lately

But these past few days

My mind has been away

Stuck in a parallel universe

Not wanting to engage with anyone or anything

I can’t commit to anything

Nothing seems to hold my interest

Long enough for me to smile

Everything is fleeting

Isn’t a loan supposed to be an act of compassion

An act of kindness

To someone desperately in need

Why add to the debt

To someone already down on their lock

Why not be a good Samaritan

Offer help without compounding interest

Is interest to increase wealth

To someone who already has it

Can we be better to our brothers and sisters

Do we need to exploit
